Biographical Information

The following is from the Legislative death resolution:

The Honorable T. C. "Doc" Rhodes passed away at the age of seventy-nine on June 11, 1979 in Phoenix.

Born in North Carolina and raised in Texas, Mr. Rhodes first came to Arizona in 1924 and began farming, ranching and other business ventures in Avondale.  For fifty-five years he was an outstanding leader in civic and community affairs and an important political party leader in Western Maricopa County.

He was a dedicated member of the Avondale school board for thirty-three years, was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club and a charter member of the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce.  He also was a past member of the Boy Scouts of America, the Farm Bureau and the Wigwam Golf Club.

First elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in the Twentieth Legislature, he served with distinction from 1951 through 1966.  Mr. Rhodes served ably and competently as Chairman of the Education, State Government and County Affairs Committees and as Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and the Rules Committee.  He worked skillfully and successfully with his associates on the Arizona Development, Highways and Bridges, Agriculture and Irrigation, Fish and Game, Livestock and Public Lands, Suffrage and Elections, Ways and Means and Natural Resources Committees.  He was also a member of the Legislative Council and ex officio member of the State Planning and Building Commission.  He was particularly interested in agricultural and tax matters and was responsible for introducing much legislation in those areas.

Mr. Rhodes was the father of the late Bill Rhodes who served as State Senator in the Twenty-seventh Legislature in 1965.
