PHOENIX, Nov. 12. - John W. Ross of Bisbee has been appointed associate justice of the Arizona supreme court to fill the term of Judge Alfred Franklin, resigned. The appointment was made by Governor George W. P. Hunt today.  It is understood that the appointment has been accepted, effective Nov. 13.

The appointee is a brother of Judge Henry D. Ross, present associate justice of the supreme court.   He has been a resident of Arizona since 1899 and has been engaged in the practice of law in this state for many years.  He has resided at Bisbee for the past ten years.

Judge Franklin tendered his resignation as chief justice of the supreme court when he secured the appointment as collector of internal revenue for the state of Arizona.  His term as chief justice expires Dec. 31 of the present year.

Upon his resignation, Judge Cunningham assumed the chief justiceship.

Judge A. C. Baker, who has just been elected to the office, was first appointed to fill the unexpired term of Judge Franklin by Governor Hunt, but was obliged to decline because of the volume of personal business confronting him.

Birth: Arizona Legislative Biography sheet information came from obituaries:  Bisbee Daily Review and The Arizona Republic, July 1, 1945:  "Born in Berryville in 1863"  However, 1900 federal census of Jerome, Yavapai Co. , Arizona Territory lists "Jno W Ross" Age: 30 Birth Date: Nov 1869 Birthplace: Arkansas with his wife Lida.  The age 30 had been written over the age 37 and this might have been to make him closer in age to his wife.  In the 1870 census of Berryville, Arkansas, he was noted as 6 years old which seems more in line with a Nov 1863 birth; Death:  Arizona Legislative Biography sheet; Cemetery:   The Arizona Republic, July 1, 1945:  "Cremation at Denver. Ashes buried in Greenwood Memorial Park where his wife Lida, and his only son, John, are buried."
