Due to illness, Donald R. Aldridge stepped down temporarily as Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives on September 5, 1997 and Bill McGibbon, who was Speaker pro Tempore, assumed the duties of Speaker (Journal of the House of Representatives, 43rd Legislature, 1st Regular Session, p. ii). No session was held during this time. Donald R. Aldridge resigned as Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives on October 20, 1997. He continued to serve as Representative from District 1. Rep. Jeffrey “Jeff” Groscost was elected Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives on November 12, 1997 (Journal of the House of Representatives, 43rd Legislature, 2nd Special Session, November 12, 1997-November 14, 1997, pp. 2-3).
The following is from the Legislative death resolution:
The Honorable Donald R. Aldridge passed away on September 19, 1999 at the age of sixty-two.
Born in Lake Linden, Michigan in 1937, Don Aldridge received his baccalaureate degree in communications from the University of Michigan. He ably served his country for eight years as an enlisted man and commissioned officer in the United States Army before beginning a successful career in real estate in Lake Havasu City, Arizona in 1969.
Don Aldridge served the public in numerous worthwhile capacities, including Republican county chairman, precinct committeeman, deputy registrar and Mohave County Supervisor. In 1983, he was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives where he capably served for sixteen years.
Throughout his exemplary legislative service, Don Aldridge was dedicated to conservative issues and worked to represent the interests of rural Arizona. He served four years as chairman of the House Rules Committee. In 1997 he was elected Speaker of the House, a position he held until health problems forced him to step down ten months later. Don Aldridge was known as a straightforward and dedicated legislator who worked diligently to serve his constituents and this state.
Despite the demands of his business and legislative careers, Don Aldridge gave freely of his time and talents to such civic and professional organizations as the BPOE Elks, the Arizona Academy, the Rifle and Pistol Club, the Kiwanis, the Arizona Supervisors Association, the National Association of Counties and Ducks Unlimited.
