The following is from the Legislative death resolution:
The Honorable Melvin C. Greer passed away at the age of eighty-two on December 27, 1987 in the town of St. Johns.
Mr. Greer, a St. Johns Democrat, was elected to three consecutive terms in the State Senate during the Twenty-second, Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Legislatures, from January, 1955 to January, 1961. During his six years in the Senate, Mr. Greer served all three terms on the Committees on Public Health and Welfare, Education and Constitutional Amendments and Referendum. Mr. Greer served two terms on the Committees on Finance and Revenue, Tourist and Industry Development, and Employees and Supplies, of which he was Chairman. Mr. Greer served one term each on the Committees on Methods and Business, Counties and Municipalities and Enrolling and Engrossing, of which he was Vice-chairman.
Melvin C. Greer was born in Eager, Arizona on November 17, 1905 to Stansell Greer and Ella Brown Greer. He graduated from St. Johns High School and attended Arizona State College at Flagstaff [now Northern Arizona University] for three years, earning a normal diploma and a teaching certificate.
Mr. Greer married Eleanor Jones on May 19, 1926 in St. Johns. He taught school in Apache County for sixteen years, served as Deputy Apache County Assessor, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and City Clerk of St. Johns and was a member of the City Council for eight years.
Mr. Greer owned a cattle ranch and considered being a cattleman his primary occupation.
