Daniel S. Halacy, 82, of Lakewood, an author, died March 20 in Wheat Ridge.... He received a bachelor of arts degree from Arizona State University.... He authored 78 books, short stories, and articles. He was involved with Solar Energy Research Institute. His interests included mountain climbing, skiing, golf, power planes, sail planes, and flying radio controlled aircraft.

...Halacy 's family could not afford to send him to college, so he worked a series of jobs while taking classes when he could. He was working at an aviation plant when the U.S. entered World War II.... While working in California after the war, he joined a writers group and began sending his stories to magazines....
The Korean War put a temporary halt to Halacy 's burgeoning writing career.... Returning to civilian life in Arizona, Halacy went back to school and to writing....
Halacy taught college writing courses while completing his education, earning a bachelor's degree from Arizona State College in 1957 at age 38. He took a series of jobs doing technical writing to support his growing family before becoming a full-time author.
In Arizona, Halacy entered politics and served two terms as a Republican state senator in the late 1960s. In the mid-'70s he worked on Arizona's bid to become home to the National Solar Energy Research Institute.....
Military Experience
U.S. Air Force, World War II veteran, Korean War veteran: "He was working at an aviation plant when the U.S. entered World War II, and he became a navigator in the Army Air Forces....
