Biographical Information

The following is from the Legislative death resolution:

On the thirtieth day of May [April], 1969, at the age of eighty-eight, the Honorable William W. Mitchell, Sr., passed away in the City of Tempe.

Mr. Mitchell was a native of Illinois, and came to Arizona fifty-eight years ago.  He was publisher of the Mesa Free Press from 1910 to 1912.  He had been actively engaged in land development in the area for many years.

Mr. Mitchell was a Past Grand Master of the Odd Fellows Lodge 14 in Mesa and was a member of the lodge for sixty-two years.  He was also a member of Mesa Rebekah Lodge 7, the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Tempe, a thirty-year member of Rotary and an honorary member of the American Legion.

The Honorable William W. Mitchell, Sr., served with distinction in the Thirteenth, Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Twenty-second, and Twenty-third Arizona Legislatures, as a member of the House of Representatives, during the period of 1937 to 1958.  He served on several Standing Committees, including Banking and Insurance, Education, Printing and Clerks, Public Lands, Reconstruction and Unemployment, Capitol Buildings and Grounds, Corporations, Accounting and Business Methods, Agriculture and Irrigation, Suffrage and Elections, and Planning and Development.

He also served as Chairman of the following Standing Committees:  Institutional Reorganization, Public Institutions, and Administration.
